Tim Keller on Money

This has been posted before, but it’s worth a second look.

“You will always give effortlessly to that which is your salvation, to those things which give your life meaning.  If Jesus is the one who saved you, your money flows out easily into His work, His people, His causes.  If, however, your real religion is your appearance, or your social status, or personal comfort, or pleasure, your money flows most easily into those items and symbols.” -Tim Keller

Money Saving Tips

In this economy, we all have to make concessions to make sure we weather the storm and stay afloat.  However, there is no need to sacrifice looking cute, shopping and feeling good in the meantime!  How do we maintain a shopping and beauty regime on about half the budget?

1.  Get your hair done at an Aveda Institute or a salon for stylists in training.  We live in Atlanta, so we go to Van Michael New Talents salon.  Cuts are as good as any we’ve ever had – only $20.
2.  Shop Designer clearance websites.  There is no need to pay full price for outfits when sites like bluefly.com offer designer clothes for up to 70% off.  Plus Bluefly.com often offers free shipping – and free is even cheaper than $1.50 gas.  We recently got a $200 black cashmere sweater for $35!
3.  Mix and match expensive products with bargain beauty products.  Sure, there is nothing like fancy salon shampoo, but Neutrogena makes a great triple moisture conditioner you can get at the drug store.
4.  Don’t go to Target without a list.  We found we couldn’t go into Target without spending money on things we didn’t really need –  lip glosses, candles, new flavors of bubble gum, magazines, flip flops we never wear (you get the idea).  Everything seems cheap, and then it adds up!!  Prepare ahead of time – you’ll stick to what you really need, and save the extra cash for bluefly.com!
5.  Quit Starbucks.  We hate to say it, but there is no excuse for spending $5 on a coffee…delicious as it may be.
6.  Give back!  Even in these pinched times – you can’t pinch all your pennies.  When you give, it always comes back later!  (Just think It‘s a Wonderful Life!)
