Is it just us, or are the Best Picture nods a total disappointment? We haven’t seen them all, but we thought Warhorse was basically a rich man’s Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken, and while The Descendants was good…it was no Sideways (not to mention the crown jewel of Alexander Payne, Election, aka elaney in high school). The Help and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (which we haven’t seen) seem to be a bit sentimental for Best Pics, and as far as The Artist goes, we think we’ll stick with talkies. Midnight in Paris was very charming, but Best Picture worthy? We’re not sure. And finally, Tree of Life was the worst movie we’ve seen in a long time. Sure, it’s artsy and arguably well done, but it was a little bit forced and frankly, boring. What did you think? Are you disappointed in 2011′s options and longing for the years like 2007 with The Queen, The Departed, Babel, and Little Miss Sunshine?

While watching the Miss America pageant no longer makes us want to be among the company of 18 year olds (of appropriately evenly distributed ethnic backgrounds) with spray tans and bikinis, the Academy Awards will and always will make us want to be a movie star! We wanted to love our girl Anne Hathaway (classiest young star by far), but we have to say, her hosting with James Franco was kind of awkward. First of all, James seemed to have the charm of an 8th grade boy at Sunday lunch with his grandparents, and Anne was just a little too giddy. Eek. We still love her though, and she looked gorgeous (and really, who cares if you don’t do a great job if you look gorgeous).
Favorite dresses of the evening were Sandra (so classic and tasteful) and Cate Blanchett (love the structure and the little risk!). Also loved Gwyneth. Our worst was Scarlett (when will these people learn that the Oscars is not a place for patterned flower fabrics?!). What did you love / hate?

Reader Mo thought Penelope Cruz was the best dressed. We have to agree. We also liked Marisa Tomei and Viola Davis, but we did not like Natalie Portman (fuschia-ish pink does not belong on the red carpet) and we didn’t like SJP’s dress either. For good pics, click here. Who were your favs?

Ah it’s the elaney Superbowl. The Sunday night you can’t tear yourself away from the television – the event you spend your childhood dreaming to attend. The ladies looked beautiful last night, but we thought our dear Anne Hathaway looked the most beautiful. For a full recap, click here.
