A word we want to know more about

Swag. A swag. Swagging. Or maybe swags (is there a plural?). Are all walks swags or are just really cool walks swags? Do you have to be crunk to swag? Or should you say, do you have to be crunk to have a swag? If you are a tall blonde girl, can you swag? Or do you have a swag? Or do you have a really lame swag? Can you swag in pumps? Can any reader help us learn more about this hip term we want to start using?

Freakonomics Baby Name Predictions

freakonomics.jpg

Freakonomics, by Steven Levitt and Steven Dunbar, is one of the most interesting books we’ve read in the past year.  Part of the book is about names and the impact they have on a person’s life.  For example, does having an ethnic sounding name hurt one’s chances for a job? (They were surprised to find it did not).  It also analyzes how names become popular.  They say names climb through the echelons of society.  Dunbar and Levitt included a list of names they predict will be very popular in 2015:

J.Lo chooses boring names

J.Lo and Marc debuted their new twins’ names: Max and Emme.  Hmmm, can you say anticlimactic?  We like the Harlows and the Apples and the Kingstons.  We even like Scout Willis.  We love Suri (though prefer the spelling Surrey).  But Max and Emme?  Yeah, they are cute, but they are so regular.  And Max is coming on the heels of the Max Bratman debut.  We highly doubt that Max Anthony will be okay with sharing his star name with Max Bratman.  And Emme?  I mean, it’s so high school homecoming queen.  Where is the tantalizing lure of the celebrity baby name?

We found out recently that you can change a baby’s name up to a year, and we suggest J.Lo don’t worry if it cost a thing, just go back to the block and reconsider!

Name Trends Through Time

Are you into names?

images.jpg

I am.  And I found the most interesting tool for tracking the popularity of names through time.  My nickname, Laney, was the 483rd most popular name in 2006 and not even on the list before 2003.  Yet my real name, Elizabeth, is very common: #9 in 2003 and consistently in the top ten since the 1800′s.
