Recovering from Tanorexia

Name: elaney
Occupation:  blogger
Time in Recovery:  4 years

There is such thing as too tan, but for your average white girl, a slight bronzey tone (a la Jen TANiston) makes you look healthy and youthful.  The problem is that it also gives you wrinkles (oh and cancer), so as promised, when college was over, so was the love of tan.  Cue a very judgemental, not to mention snobby, approach to people that would over-tan.  Was there a little inner jealousy, sure.  But that’s not something that was disclosed.

However, as a recovering addict, it’s important to admit when you are about to fall off the wagon.   And…we’re about to fall (“It’s okay to fall.” – Jake to Gia, sick).  But, is it soooo bad to get the itch to tan circa mid February??!  Seriously.  Is it so bad to hate spray tans and want the real thing?  Geez.  There are enough problems in the world.  Maybe wanting a little tan during the pre spring months is a forgivable offense.   And it’s not just about how it looks…it’s also how it makes you feel. No one’s getting a monthly pass or anything.  It would be maybe once every 3 weeks…so what to you think?  If you are a recovered tanorexic, is it okay to just have a little moderation…?  Or do you say what we usually say: T-A-N-N-I-N-G is spelled T-R-A-S-H-Y?

The Long and The Shorts of It: Part 2

Yesterday was the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, and we’re celebrating by admitting our short summer secret.  Cutoffs.  Sure Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson almost ruined them for everyone, but we still have a strange desire to wear them.  While we do not believe that cutoffs are appropriate past the age of 22 under most circumstances, if you are on a lake  / in a boat, cutoffs, a white v-neck t-shirt, and aviators still makes you feel cool.  Ugh!  It makes us cringe to admit it.  But even eMum look cool in that.  What do you think – is there something about long summer days that makes you want to cut off your shorts?

Summer: 9 to 5 Style

As our running partner (and teacher friend) parted ways with us this morning, and as we watched her run of into the wild blue yonder that is her summer vacation, it was difficult to not feel a pang of jealousy.  However, envy does no one any good.  Plus, it ages you.  So we’ve decided to come up with a list of ways to do summer: 9 to 5 style.

1.  Wear opened, toed, highly inappropriate sandals to work.  Es fiiine.
2.  Go blonde.
3.  Enjoy a little sunset happy hour with friends and coworkers.  Margaritas on the deck!  (easy recipe here).
4.  Eat your lunch outside – you aren’t that busy!
5.  Wear bright colors and lots of dresses.
6.  Take a vaca – even if you are super busy – summer just isn’t summer without sinking your toes into the sand.
