Kate the Wasp

Our dear friend Kate and fellow Vandy alum is now a stand up comedian in NYC.  She’s doing a series of web videos right now…exploring some lesser frequented haunts in NYC.  Check her out at the skate park and the bodega, or watch our favorite below…her trip to the tattoo parlor.  ”Do you guys have any locations in Nantucket?”

elaney + Sunday Bar = ATL Meetup

Official Sunday Bar email 1/29/12:

—-

Sunday Barflies,

At Sunday Bar, we pride ourselves on the range of our beverages almost as much as we pride ourselves on the fact  they all contain alcohol.   Variety is a key facet of our enterprise.  We shun the masculine/feminine labels that too often comes with beverage selection, and we encourage our patrons to enjoy the drink on its own terms.  In a sense, we’re kind of like the Gloria Steinem of the cocktail world.

But this week’s drink is definitely girly.  There’s no way around it.  It’s so girly that I had to get super-girly Barfly elaney to introduce it with an extra-girly announcement.  As evidence of how girly it is, please note that elaney has actually achieved the enduring feminist goal of reducing the number of words in the term “Super Bowl.”  Guys of Sunday Bar, I encourage you to go to the Elaney website and launch your complaints.  Following her frivolous announcement about “champagne-induced giggling,” I have some important administrative notes that I could not in good conscience delegate to a woman.

Without further ado, ELANEY:

Let’s get real, Barmaids.

We love our purses and we lust for expensive shoes, but as every elaney girl knows, sometimes a champagne flute is a girl’s best accessory.  So, tell us ladies.  Is it just us, or has the male dominated culture of Sunday bar gotten you down?  Do you feel like you have to drink Old Fashioneds and wear an ascot to be accepted?  Are you tired of your Tory Burch boots going unnoticed?  Have you had it with your Kate Spade tops smelling of campfire?!?!  Well suffer silently no more.  It’s ladies night at Sunday Bar, so grab your favorite cocktail ring and get ready to roll out the pink carpet.

Come join the team from elaney for Champagne Cocktails (and champagne induced giggling).  We’ll provide the spirits; you provide your inner girlie girlie.  Come ready to discuss The Bachelor, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills finale, and scoop on Heidi Klum and Seal’s divorce.  Conversations on the Superbowl need not apply, but any feather boa is a friend of ours.  See ya on Sunday…in pink and pearls.

xoxo,

elaney

Important Administrative Notes:

- Event kicks off at 7:30 at 1857 Volberg St. NW 30318.  Beer, wine, snacks, donations, desserts, etc. are welcome but not required.  HOWEVER, guys should think extra hard about bringing beer this week, or they will only have champagne to wash down their shame.

- If you were left off last week’s email, I apologize.  I’m reconstructing my email list after my computer was stolen.  Hopefully everyone is back.

- Bring anyone – all are invited!

See you at the Bar!

Tommy

I’d Like to Thank the Academy…for Nothing

Is it just us, or are the Best Picture nods a total disappointment?  We haven’t seen them all, but we thought Warhorse was basically a rich man’s Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken, and while The Descendants was good…it was no Sideways (not to mention the crown jewel of Alexander Payne, Election, aka elaney in high school).  The Help and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (which we haven’t seen) seem to be a bit sentimental for Best Pics, and as far as The Artist goes, we think we’ll stick with talkies.  Midnight in Paris was very charming, but Best Picture worthy?  We’re not sure.  And finally, Tree of Life was the worst movie we’ve seen in a long time.  Sure, it’s artsy and arguably well done, but it was a little bit forced and frankly, boring.  What did you think?  Are you disappointed in 2011′s options and longing for the years like 2007 with The Queen, The Departed, Babel, and Little Miss Sunshine?

Why Didn’t You Write??*

After recently reading Mindy Kaling’s book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (which, btw, could also be a title for a book we might write on our college experience), we started thinking about her love of romantic comedies (one of the more clever sections of the book – along with the list of things all men should do to be attractive), we started thinking…where have all the good men romantic comedies gone?? The first decade of the 2000s brought so many gems…The Holiday, 27 Dresses, Sweet Home Alabama,  Love Actually, My Best Friend’s Wedding, He’s Just Not That Into You, The Proposal, and Wedding Crashers (okay, so Wedding Crashers is a bit untraditional, but it’s a goodie).  What have we had lately?  Life As We Know It?  How Do You Know?  Ugh.  Major Bleh.**  Dear Hollywood, please hear our cry…Reese, Katherine Heigl, Sandra Bullock, come back to us!  Give us the When Harry Met Sally of the present.  elaney girls, help us…are there any recent or coming soon romcoms that might be worth seeing?

*Such a great line from The Notebook

**The one exception might be Crazy, Stupid, Love which was pretty g.  Ryan Gosling – from Lars and the Real Girl to The Notebook to Half Nelson…you’ve never done us wrong.

Favorite $10 Bottles of Wine

You know we’d pretty much live in a wine cellar if we could get away with it, and we’ve loved sipping through some of the nicer bottles we were gifted this Christmas (Thanks Reader Isa!).  However, as we’ve discussed, you can’t always get what you want, sometimes, you get what you need (yes, emum, $10 bottles on wine belong on the list of what you need.  No emails.)

Our two favs right now?  Penfold’s Cabs and Alamos Malbecs. Descriptions:

Penfold’s Cab Sav:  ”The wines are affordable, everyday, easy-drinking wine and is a classic Australian marriage of fruit power and structure. The Cabernet Sauvignon offers opulent dark berry flavous with a moderately firm structure and rich finish. ”

Alamos Malbec:  ”Alamos Malbec presents a dark purple color with violet highlights. The nose offers bright black cherry aromas with light floral notes and a touch of toast. The mouthfeel is full and rich, with ripe, concentrated cassis and black raspberry fruit flavors interwoven with a touch of chocolate and sweet spice from light oak aging.”

Any more suggestions from the peanut gallery?  We always love an excuse to taste test!

White Jeans (for Men?)

Two things we’re fond of:  1)  white jeans and 2) men.  However, we’re also fond of both our high school cheerleading uniform and the present, and we’re not sure they belong together either.  What do you think ladies?  Is this one step too far?  Don’t hear us wrong.  We love a little metro.  Give us the Sevens.  Give us the skinny ties.  But white jeans…let’s save those for ourselves and Don Johnson.

We Love This New Trend

Another great video playing off our fav, “‘Stuff’” Girls Say”  (Also check out the twitter feed!).  Some favs:  ”Yay buffering!,”  ”Can I burn a copy of your Nickelback CD?,” and “I’m hoping he asks me to help him move.”
