Ohh, I have one! Reader Melby and I are in a wedding in July where the sweet (very fashionable) bride has let us pick from 5 styles and 2 colors – Melby’s wearing sage green and I’m wearing pewter. The bridey is letting us accesorize anyway we want to feel more like ourselves = so nice!! But as a tomboy who usually doesn’t decide what to wear until 30 minutes before hand…I need some help! What shoes, jewelry, etc do I wear with this? http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WeddingParties/Wedding_Bridesmaid/dresses/silktaffeta/PRDOVR~22511/22511.jsp
Thanks for your help!

I know i am not elaney and she is the final word, but with that dress I would style like they have it in the pic. minimal stuff (no necklace) up top because of the ruffle. I would do simple earrings and a fun, chunky bracelet (jcrew has some cool ones).
my question for elaney is what are some unique hostess gift/bridesmaid gift ideas. aside from the always popular monogrammed bumper sticker?

def no necklace – pretty bracelet, but wouldn’t go too chunky, since you are a bridesmaid in a wedding. also try some gold drop earrings. maybe with a stone or pearl?

bridesmaids gifts are nice if you can have them forever – little herand is one of the personal favs (ct) or a print (shawty)
for shower hosts gifts, we think monogrammed soaps are nice. or really nice stationary. dear crane paper, we love you. love, elaney
also fun to stick with the theme – for a kitchen shower you could do monogrammed kitchen towels / a cookbook, etc

Warning about drop earrings: if they swing too much, they will be an annoying distraction. Watched in horror once at a wedding that I (thank goodness) was not in. Drops are good, just make sure they don’t hit you in the face or get tangled in your hair as you try to keep up with the bride at her ceremony.
And question. My friend is getting married in October, and she seems to have no idea that she’s supposed to pick up small hostess gifts for those throwing showers. One of the ladies throwing a shower is a stickler for etiquette (okay, I am, too), and she’ll potentially be furious if my friend is so rude as to not provide a small token. I am also throwing a shower, so I can’t think of how to mention this to my friend without sounding like I’m on a fishing expedition. Ideas? Thanks, elaney!

loving long hair these days, but also love the long in the front bob: http://elaneymedia.com/2009/03/12/ehasselbeck-haircut/

honestly, we think you should just say “what are you doing for the hostess gift?” and when she says nothing, you say “oh you have to do something little and fun…” you have to say something though. just make it really casual.
