Dog Names

Posted by elaney intern: Reader Mo.
As someone named Mollie, I often hear the phrase, “Oh, I have a dog named Molly/Mollie!!” Great, thanks for sharing. My friends Maggie, Gracie, Lucy, and Ginger have probably heard this before as well. So as I am 6 weeks out from having a dog of my own, I am nervous as to what to name her. I grew up in a house where my attorney father made us all name our dogs after supreme court justices (my husband shot down Ruthie for Ruth Bader Ginsberg…) Reader ct suggested a cool character from a movie or novel – her dog is named Idgie (Fried Green Tomatoes, anyone??) So elaney readers, gimme your suggestions on cool dog names!! No Maggies and Mollys allowed!

I get that all the time too! A girl I work with named her dog Phelps. I thought that was really cool.

I have heard of lots of dog names from literary classics lately. Huck, Sawyer, Finn, Atticus, Scout… etc. Those are always cute.
We aren’t so highbrow and named our dogs after characters from Arrested Development. One is Maeby and the other is Buster.

I like the names that have cultural significance — like a street from your college town (I would choose Baxter from Athens) or your favorite movie/tv/book character.

I work in art, and have named all of my pets after artists I love: i.e. had a fish named Sarge after John Singer Sargent.

I think a two-syllable name is a good idea. Danica became “Dani” because it rolls off the tongue a little more easily. What about a character from Glee? Or a famous artist (art history reference). Or something Italian (Italy reference). OK, I’ll keep brainstorming…

I know I thought about Glee last night, but don’t love the name Rachel Barry…
Carli, love the AD references! I had thought of Scout….

Yay!! I can’t wait to meet the little guy – I think Ruthie is presh, tell your hubby I said so
Hmmm, I agree with the other ladies that dog names with some sort of meaning are always good…Julep was a nod to her dad’s KY roots – so yall could do something Louisville -esque as well…or something S. GA/St Simons/Sea Island. I am going to name my next dog the nickname my dad called me growing up – LeRoy Brown
yes, i am a girl and that is my nickname.

I just wrote Mo an email about this, but my advice is practice calling the name!! My dog is Sadie, and when I call for her it sounds like a high pitched squeak at times….I’m sure my neighbors cringe….

Question: Has anyone ever actually met a dog named Rover?
Also, I like Oliver.

I have always wanted to name a dog after another animal. Like Monkey or Turtle. Also, if your dog is white- I like Biscuit.
