Lizzie Miller: Plus Size Model

They say the average woman is a size 12, and the average model is a size 0.  For the most part, we’d observed that most members of our peer group (girls in their mid twenties) no longer make themselves crazy to be a size 0, but we don’t think the battle with body image is ever completely won (or really, even close).

Glamour Magazine published this picture of “plus size” size 12 Lizzie Miller, and everyone has an opinion.  What do we think?  Is something like this in the media the first step for alleviating some of the pressure women have on their bodies?  Or is there nothing we can do?  Does this picture surprise you?  Do you think this is what models should look like?  Thoughts?

  • i think you know my opinion on plus size models and the dove girls….

  • mel – don’t break my future little girl’s heart.

  • I love this picture! It makes me want to go to McDonalds and order a big pack of fries. I hope that one day fat will be the new skinny. Maybe this picture is our new beginning ladies…..

  • I think this is definitely a step in the right direction, especially because I see so many girls struggling with eating disorders in my counseling practice…the fact that this is shocking image to look at is truly sad because it shows how powerful the portrayal of “beauty” in the media is. k, soap box over :)

  • ok. is it weird that if she didn’t have the gut I wouldn’t have known she was plus size or that they were trying to make us all feel better? I think that if you really want girls to not worry about body image then take away air brushing. We’re supposed to believe she’s a size 12 with no dents and dimples? no freckles or wrinkles? All that to say, you can’t stop comparrison. We’ll all fall to that sin.

  • I prefer dressed models.

  • I am pretty sure emum would dissaprove of the nudity here…

  • eMum approves of positive body image

  • mo – why do you always have to be difficult?

  • As much as airbrushing has led to all of this “I need to be perfect” nonsense, if it went away, wouldn’t tptb just look for even more perfect girls with no cellulite? Let’s face it, even Michaelangelo wielded an airbrush.

  • i would just rather look at giselle. i don’t think guts or cellulite are pretty – but i also don’t like movies that are not happy endings! but maybe i’m an escapist?

  • the part that bothers me is that lizzie miller is clearly a beautiful woman – and i think the sad part is that she falls outside of what our culture considers beautiful – even though that’s what most women look like. why have we chosen to think that most women are not beautiful and a “tiny” portion of the population is the standard to be desired?

  • skinny models just make me feel bad. I like something I can relate to. the thing is, if this Lizzie girl were clothed, I think she would look really normal.

  • I think this girl is beautiful!! I am all for having ladies of all sizes and shapes be featured in mags – kudos to Glamour! The best will be when it’s not a big deal that she is in there!

  • in totally different news, Kate Spade is having a sample sale if anyone’s interested: http://www.katespade.com/samplesale/login.jsp

  • I don’t think the size 0 anorexic look should not be put on a pedestal and something to be desired. However, I also don’t think that we should applaud unhealthy lifestyles either. It’s hard to say what the perfect size is and it is obviously different for different body types. But with the alarming rates of obesity in our country we should be careful that we don’t start labeling the unhealthy standard in our country as “normal”.

  • Woops, typo…I meant the size 0 look should NOT be put on a pedestal! :)
